From Service to Support: A Veteran’s Journey to Healing and Helping Others

Tanner Wilde’s story is one of courage, resilience, and the power of human connection. At just 20 years old, he was deployed to Afghanistan, where he served with the Bravo Company 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment. Wilde’s military career spanned several countries, including Syria and Bangladesh, and he eventually became a special operations civil affairs team sergeant and medical sergeant.

However, Wilde’s experiences took a toll on his mental health. He struggled with depression, traumatic brain injuries, and the stress of readjusting to civilian life after leaving the military in 2021. “I was searching for what my purpose was because the military is all I ever knew,” Wilde said. “I didn’t … feel there was any joy, hope, you know, just nothing.” Fortunately, with the support of his wife and various veteran-centric organizations, Wilde was able to accept help and begin his journey towards healing.

Veteran Outreach and Support

Today, Wilde dedicates his time to helping fellow veterans through organizations like Nodens Outdoors and Believet Canine Service Partners. These groups provide essential services, including bowhunting therapy programs and service animals, to veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries, and other disabilities. Wilde’s work with these organizations has given him a new sense of purpose, allowing him to make a positive impact on the lives of others. “It may not be what I was doing in the military, but being able to currently have a role in helping veterans and even those that are transitioning out of the military find hope where hope doesn’t seem present is beyond rewarding,” he said.

Wilde’s service dog, Taz, has been an integral part of his healing journey. On Veterans Day, Wilde and Taz volunteered with Believet Canine Service Partners to raise awareness about the benefits of service animals for veterans. “They’re trying to provide service animals for veterans, but they do cost thousands of dollars,” Wilde explained. “That’s something, the only way to help expand the availability is to go speak about them and the benefits that they do to help veterans.”

Breaking the Silence: Seeking Help and Support

Wilde’s story highlights the importance of seeking help and support when struggling with mental health challenges. “It’s OK to not be OK,” he emphasized. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline offers a safe and confidential space for individuals to talk about their feelings and connect with trained specialists. Wilde encourages others to reach out for help, saying, “And as hard as it is, there will be somebody that will listen.”

Wilde’s own journey towards healing was marked by the support of his loved ones and the community. Recently, he received a new furnace for his Mounds View home, courtesy of The Snelling Co. and local Bryant distributor Auer Steel. This gesture of kindness has made a significant difference for Wilde and his family, who are grateful for the community’s support.
