Waymo Expands Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service to Los Angeles Freeways

Nearly one year after launching its autonomous ride-hailing service in Los Angeles, Waymo is taking a significant step forward by expanding its operations to include freeways. This move marks a major milestone for the company, which has been testing on L.A. freeways with safety drivers since early this year. The expansion is expected to attract new customers and appeal to riders traveling longer distances.

Waymo’s co-chief executive, Dmitri Dolgov, expressed his excitement about the development, stating, “This has been a long time in the making, and I could not be more excited to start bringing freeways to our riders.” He emphasized the company’s focus on system safety and reliability, highlighting the time and effort invested in ensuring the technology is ready for freeway operations. The company’s artificial intelligence is designed to handle the unique demands and variables of highway driving, providing a robust safety protocol for riders.

Expansion to San José and Airport Service

In addition to the Los Angeles freeway expansion, Waymo is also increasing its coverage area in the Bay Area to include San José, establishing over 260 square miles of uninterrupted service across the region. The new San José service will feature curbside pickup and drop-off at San José Mineta International Airport, making it the second airport accessible via Waymo, alongside the Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix. This development comes on the heels of Tesla’s announcement to expand its robotaxi service to the San José airport.

Waymo’s expansion is part of a larger effort by companies like Tesla and Zoox, a self-driving vehicle startup owned by Amazon, to put more autonomous cars on the road and demonstrate the safety and convenience of the technology. With millions of miles of driverless trips already completed in cities like Austin and Atlanta, Waymo is poised to continue its growth, with plans to expand to Miami and Washington, D.C. in the near future.

History and Background

Waymo’s journey began as the Google Self-Driving Car Project, which was launched in 2009 and put its first autonomous car on the road in 2015. The project rebranded as Waymo in 2016 under Google’s parent company Alphabet and launched its driverless ride-hailing service, Waymo One, in 2020. With its strong foundation in artificial intelligence and commitment to safety, Waymo is leading the charge in the development of autonomous vehicle technology.
