Ariana Grande Rushed by Overzealous Fan at “Wicked: For Good” Premiere in Singapore
Singapore authorities have charged an Australian man, identified as Johnson Wen, 26, for rushing film star Ariana Grande at the Asia premiere of “Wicked: For Good” at Universal Studios in Singapore. The incident occurred when Wen jumped a barricade and approached Grande, who was attending the opening night of the film along with other stars.
According to court documents, Wen has been charged with “being a public nuisance.” He represented himself in court and indicated that he would plead guilty. Wen is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday. If sentenced, he faces a fine of $1,500, three months in jail, or both.
Viral Video Captures the Incident
Viral video clips show Wen wrapping his arms around a shocked Grande before jumping up and down and waving to the crowd. Grande’s co-star, Cynthia Erivo, quickly came to her defense, jumping between Wen and Grande and shoving him away. Security guards then intervened, grabbing Wen and putting him back behind the barricade. Footage also shows Erivo and others on the red carpet comforting Grande after the incident.
Interestingly, Wen shared a video of the incident on Instagram, thanking Grande for “letting him jump on the Yellow Carpet” with her. However, his actions have been widely criticized, and he now faces serious consequences for his behavior.
Background on the Movie and its Stars
“Wicked: For Good” is a highly anticipated movie musical, set to be released in the United States on November 21. The film stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who have been inseparable during the movie’s press tours. In a recent interview with “CBS Mornings,” Erivo revealed that the duo made a pact early in production to take care of and support each other, recognizing the big responsibility and undertaking that the project entailed.
Ariana Grande, 32, began her career as a teen on Broadway before embarking on a highly successful pop career. However, her life was marked by tragedy in 2017 when one of her concerts was bombed in the Manchester Arena attack, which killed 22 people, wounded over 1,000, and left Grande with PTSD.
