Justin Herbert and Chargers thrashed by Jaguars in worst lack of the Jim Harbaugh period

Chargers Suffer Worst Loss Under Jim Harbaugh Against Jaguars

The Los Angeles Chargers experienced a dismal day on the field, suffering their worst loss under Coach Jim Harbaugh’s leadership. The Jacksonville Jaguars dominated the game, winning 35-6 at EverBank Stadium. This significant defeat marks the Chargers’ worst loss since a 63-21 thrashing by the Raiders on December 14, 2023.

The Jaguars’ impressive ground game and pass rush proved too much for the Chargers, who were only able to muster a pair of field goals throughout the game. The Chargers’ offense struggled, with quarterback Justin Herbert taking a beating and spending time in the blue medical tent. Herbert was under heavy pressure on most of his drop-backs, despite the Jaguars entering the game tied for last in sacks.

Chargers’ Offensive Line Woes

The Chargers’ offensive line woes were evident, with Herbert being sacked three times and limited to 81 yards passing with an interception. The team’s running game was also ineffective, with only 42 yards gained on the ground, compared to the Jaguars’ 192 yards. The Chargers’ offense gained a total of five yards in its first three second-half possessions, highlighting the team’s struggles.

First Half Struggles

The first half of the game was particularly forgettable for the Chargers, who trailed 14-6 at halftime. Herbert’s health was a major concern after he was slammed to the turf on a fourth-down drop-back with 29 seconds remaining in the half. Despite the play being whistled dead due to a penalty, Jaguars defensive end B.J. Green still managed to hit Herbert, causing him to visit the blue medical tent.

The Chargers’ running back situation was also a challenge, with Kimani Vidal spending much of the first half on the sideline due to a leg injury. The team had promoted two practice-squad running backs to play behind him, highlighting the depth issues at the position.

The Chargers’ struggles against the Jaguars were a far cry from their previous encounters, including a notable playoff loss three years ago where they blew a 27-point lead. This time, the Jaguars left no room for doubt, dominating the game from start to finish.
