Tragedy Strikes Big Sur: Father Dies Trying to Save Daughter Swept into Ocean
A devastating incident occurred on Friday near Big Sur, California, when a 7-year-old girl was swept into the ocean by powerful waves, resulting in the death of her father, Yuji Hu, who attempted to rescue her. According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, Hu, a 39-year-old Canadian citizen from Calgary, Alberta, entered the water to save his daughter but unfortunately lost his life in the process.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
Hu was pulled from the water by a beachgoer and an off-duty California State Parks peace officer but was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The girl’s body was later found by a diver around 1:20 p.m. on Sunday, approximately 100 yards off Garrapata Beach, about half a mile north of her last known location. The Sheriff’s Office reported that the waves were estimated to be 15-20 feet high, caused by winds of up to 70 mph, which were part of the same weather system that brought heavy rain to the Los Angeles region over the weekend.
The incident occurred at Garrapata Beach, along Highway 1, just north of Rocky Point Restaurant. The child’s mother also attempted to assist in the rescue but was able to return to shore and was treated for mild hypothermia at a local hospital. A 2-year-old child was not injured in the incident. Initially, the girl’s age was reported as 5 years old, but this was later corrected to 7 years old after confirmation from family members.
Search and Rescue Operations
A large-scale search effort was launched on Saturday morning, involving the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, state agencies, and the U.S. Coast Guard. The operation continued through sunset but was later suspended. Before the child’s body was found, state parks officials maintained a presence at the scene to conduct shoreline and accessible-area searches on foot. The family has requested privacy and does not wish to issue a statement.
The tragedy serves as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of the ocean. According to the National Weather Service, the strong winds and high waves were part of a larger weather system that affected the region. The incident highlights the importance of being aware of weather conditions and taking necessary precautions when visiting coastal areas.
