Tragic Loss of Alhambra Police Officer in Early Morning Pursuit Crash

A devastating incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, resulting in the loss of a dedicated police officer and another individual. The Alhambra Police Department has identified the fallen officer as 28-year-old Alec Sanders, who had been serving with the department for eight months. According to Alhambra Police Chief Garrett Kennedy, Officer Sanders was known for his reliability and kindness, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues and the community.

Officer Sanders’ Background and Service

Officer Sanders had previously served with the Long Beach Police Department for approximately a year before joining the Alhambra Police Department. He was described by Chief Kennedy as an officer who would respond to every call, whether dispatched or not, demonstrating his commitment to his duty. Sanders was also a devoted family man, engaged to be married, and an enthusiastic fan of the Dallas Cowboys. His passion for fitness and travel were also notable aspects of his personality.

The incident occurred at the intersection of West Valley Boulevard and Edgewood Drive, where a Hyundai SUV, driven by 27-year-old Steven Zapata, collided with Officer Sanders’ patrol vehicle. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that Zapata was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle. Two other individuals were in the SUV, including a 33-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 52-year-old male who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Reaction from Authorities and Community Leaders

California Highway Patrol Assistant Chief Joe Zizi confirmed the details of the incident, and Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff at the state Capitol and capital office building in honor of Officer Sanders. Newsom expressed his deepest sympathies to the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues, praising his exemplary service and courage. Hilda Solis, chair pro tem of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, also ordered flags on government properties to be flown at half-staff, while Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) offered her condolences and support to the officer’s loved ones.

The loss of Officer Sanders has sent shockwaves through the community, with many remembering him as a dedicated public servant who had already made a positive impact in his short time with the Alhambra Police Department.
