The film’s Renaissance Fair subplot was inspired by Coughlan’s discovery of the St. Paul Winter Carnival’s Royal Court, which she read about in the Pioneer Press. The candidates’ bios and their earnestness about their roles resonated with her, and she wove this element into the story. As she noted, “It gave them a sense of place, of belonging. It was a fascinating look into a character that needed to find a place — and found that to be their place.”
