Southland’s Top 25 Boys’ Basketball Rankings After Week 1
The first week of the high school basketball season has come to a close, and the rankings are starting to take shape. The top teams in the Southland have made their presence known, with some impressive performances and upsets. Let’s take a look at the top 25 boys’ basketball rankings after week 1.
Top 5 Teams
Sierra Canyon takes the top spot, with Brandon McCoy’s impressive nine dunks in their season debut. Santa Margarita comes in second, with Brayden Kyman making five threes at Pauley Pavilion. Redondo Union jumps to third after taking down nationally ranked Arizona Sunnyslope. St. John Bosco and Harvard-Westlake round out the top 5, with Christian Collins scoring 37 points in a win over Harvard-Westlake.
Rising Teams
Some teams have made significant jumps in the rankings, including Redondo Union, which moved from 6th to 3rd after their impressive win. Damien also made a big leap, moving from 15th to 10th after Zaire Rasshan made nine threes in the Sunny Hills tournament title game. Eastvale Roosevelt, led by freshman Travis Walton Jr., has also cracked the top 20, coming in at 16th.
New Coaches and New Beginnings
Some teams are adjusting to new coaches, including Orange Lutheran, which has already seen improvements under new coach Nate Klitzing. Mater Dei, on the other hand, has a lot of work ahead after a tough opening loss. San Gabriel Academy gave Harvard-Westlake a scare in their opener, showing promise for the season ahead.
