Discovery of a 200-Year-Old Shipwreck in Lake Ontario

A team of Canadian divers has made a remarkable discovery in Lake Ontario, unearthing a 200-year-old shipwreck that is believed to be a British vessel from the 19th century. The ship was found approximately 300 feet below the surface, and remarkably, it appears to be fully intact. The discovery was made by a team of divers who were on a mission to find the Rapid City shipwreck, which sank near Toronto in 1917.

The team, led by President of the Ontario Underwater Council and lead exploration diver Heison Chak, was exploring the depths of Lake Ontario when they stumbled upon the ancient shipwreck. According to Chak, the team was overwhelmed with excitement and had to take a moment to calm themselves down after discovering the pristine wreck. “It took us a few moments to calm ourselves down because it’s overwhelming finding a pristine wreck that is all in one piece,” Chak told local news outlet, CBC.

Uncovering the Secrets of the Shipwreck

The shipwreck is believed to be a British vessel from the 19th century, although the exact date of its sinking is still unknown. The team plans on returning to the wreck in the next dive season to conduct a dimension survey and to take wood samples to properly date the vessel. Photos taken by Jeff Lindsay show the entire vessel in one piece, covered in mussels, with a pristine deck cabin and standing mast and topmasts remaining in their original location.

Chak noted that it is extremely rare for a team of divers to find a ship with both its main mast and fore mast still intact, as these structures are usually the first to fall apart over time. “I have never seen a top mast in any wrecks that I have dove in Ontario or in the St. Lawrence River,” Chak said. The discovery of this shipwreck is a significant find, and the team is eager to learn more about its history and significance.
