Review: “Wicked: For Good” – A Spectacle of Scale with a Timely Message
“Wicked: For Good,” the second installment of Jon M. Chu’s two-part musical adaptation, has finally arrived, and with it, a whopping 297 minutes of runtime that may leave some viewers breathless and others bewildered. The film’s grand scale, replete with power ballads, sprawling sets, and technicolor visuals, is undoubtedly a spectacle to behold. However, the question remains: is it too much of a good thing?
For fans of the original stage musical, which has been a cultural phenomenon since its debut in 2003, “Wicked: For Good” will likely be a welcome addition to the franchise. The film’s earnestness and commitment to its themes of empathy, multiculturalism, and social commentary are admirable, and the cast, particularly Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, deliver impressive performances. Erivo, in particular, shines as Elphaba, bringing depth and nuance to the character.
A Timely Commentary on Propaganda and Prejudice
The film’s exploration of propaganda, prejudice, and the dangers of simplistic dichotomies is both timely and thought-provoking. The story, which reimagines the classic “Wizard of Oz” narrative from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West, is a powerful allegory for our contemporary world. The themes of “othering,” xenophobia, and the dangers of unchecked power are all too relevant, and the film’s willingness to tackle these issues head-on is commendable.

A Visually Stunning but Occasionally Overwhelming Experience
While “Wicked: For Good” is undoubtedly a visually stunning film, with impressive production design and cinematography, it occasionally feels overwhelming. The pacing can be frenetic, with characters and plot twists coming at a breakneck speed. Additionally, the film’s reliance on set pieces and musical numbers can make it feel more like a staged production than a cinematic experience.

Ultimately, “Wicked: For Good” is a film that will likely polarize audiences. While it is a technically impressive and visually stunning production, its overwhelming scale and frenetic pacing may deter some viewers. However, for fans of the stage musical and those looking for a timely commentary on contemporary issues, it is a must-see. As Here, you can read more about the film and its themes.
