Protecting Your Vehicle from Keyless Car Theft: A Growing Concern

Car thieves are increasingly using sophisticated methods to steal keyless or “push to start” vehicles, leaving owners vulnerable to theft. Recently, a series of incidents in Anaheim Hills, California, has highlighted the need for vehicle owners to take extra precautions to secure their cars. According to the Anaheim Police Department, thieves used electronic tools to target and steal higher-end cars, including a Dodge Challenger and a Ford F-150 Raptor.

Mark Sutter, spokesperson for the Anaheim Police Department, explained that the thieves used a tablet to hack into the car’s computer system, allowing them to reprogram the vehicle and drive away. This method, known as “tablet reprograms car computer theft,” is a growing concern for law enforcement agencies. Sutter emphasized the importance of taking traditional security measures, such as parking in a garage or using a lock steering club, to protect against this type of theft.

Understanding the Threat: How Thieves Access Key Fob Signals

Another method used by thieves is accessing the key fob signal through an antenna. Many newer vehicles have a remote keyless entry system, which emits a signal that unlocks the car door and starts the engine when the driver is within a certain distance. However, this signal can be exploited by thieves using an antenna to capture and amplify it, allowing them to unlock the vehicle. This method can take less than 60 seconds to execute and is only effective when the car’s key fob is in close proximity to the car.

Protecting Your Key Fob Signal: Tips and Precautions

To protect against this type of theft, experts recommend keeping key fobs near the center of the home, away from doors and windows, to make it harder for thieves to capture the signal. Additionally, vehicle owners can purchase signal-blocking bags or boxes to store their key fobs, which can weaken the signal and prevent it from being accessed by thieves. It’s also possible to turn off the remote keyless feature altogether by following the instructions in the vehicle’s manual.

Staying Safe: Additional Tips and Recommendations

Vehicle owners can take several steps to protect their cars from keyless theft. These include parking in a secure location, using a steering wheel lock, and keeping valuables out of sight. It’s also essential to be aware of the surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. By taking these precautions and staying informed about the latest theft methods, vehicle owners can reduce the risk of their car being stolen.
