Powerful Winter Storm Disrupts Thanksgiving Travel Across the Upper Midwest

A powerful winter storm is causing significant disruptions to Thanksgiving travel across the Upper Midwest, with millions of Americans bracing for a post-Thanksgiving snowstorm that could impact over 40 states. The storm has already brought heavy snow and powerful wind gusts to the Northern Plains, resulting in numerous driving injuries and hundreds of crashes.

As a powerful lake-effect winter storm slams the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes, millions of American begin to prepare for a Post Thanksgiving snowstorm. More than 40 states could see impacts starting Friday and continue through early Monday.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the storm has already caused treacherous travel conditions across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, with Interstate 29 shut down earlier between Fargo, North Dakota, and Watertown, South Dakota. Whiteout driving conditions with wind gusts over 70 mph have been reported across the Dakotas and Minnesota, resulting in over 250 crashes and 30 injuries.

Lake-Effect Snow Expected to Bring Feet of Snow to the Great Lakes

The biggest lake-effect snow event of the season is expected to begin for the Great Lakes Snowbelt, with snow totals measured in feet before the snow finally tapers off on Saturday morning. Periods of whiteout driving conditions are expected, and the National Weather Service has warned people to avoid traveling on Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day if possible.

The Great Lakes Snowbelt in Ohio, Pennsylvania, western New York, and New York’s Tug Hill Plateau are expected to receive feet of lake-effect snow, with the worst of the snow expected to fall on Thanksgiving Day. Winds are expected to be strong enough to carry lake-effect snow bands into Syracuse and Albany in central Upstate New York and New York’s Capital Region, impacting drivers, especially along Interstate 90.

Second Winter Storm to Impact Millions Across 40+ States

A second winter storm is expected to impact millions across over 40 states, beginning on Friday, with the potential to cause significant delays at major airports across the Central U.S. The storm will move across the Central Plains on Friday into Saturday, bringing 5-8 inches of snow across portions of Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and Illinois.

Chicago is expected to see 8-12 inches of snow, which could rival its snowiest two-day total in November since records began in 1884. Chicago, Milwaukee, and Detroit airports could all see significant delays due to wind and heavy snow. Travel impacts are expected to last into Monday.
