Remembering Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom: A Life of Service and Compassion

Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old West Virginia National Guard member, was tragically killed in Wednesday’s Washington, D.C., shooting. Her colleagues at Seneca Health Services, a behavioral-health agency based in West Virginia, are still reeling from the loss of their beloved coworker. Marcie Vaughan, CEO of Seneca Health Services, shared her memories of Beckstrom, highlighting her passion for serving people and her dedication to her work.

“She had a passion for serving people,” Vaughan told CBS News. “Her decision to join the National Guard and to become a member of the behavioral health profession … that requires a person to have compassion. The fact she volunteered shows courage and dedication.” Beckstrom worked as a community engagement specialist at Seneca Health Services from January until she voluntarily deployed to D.C. around August, where she focused on supporting clients at risk of psychiatric hospitalization.

A Life of Service and Compassion

Beckstrom’s job at Seneca Health Services involved helping clients remain stable and connected to care. “She worked with individuals who had behavioral health issues…She would establish meaningful relationships and find what they needed to stay in the community,” Vaughan said. Her coworkers described her as energetic, funny, and quick to laugh, with a great sense of humor. “Her coworkers would tell you she had a great sense of humor,” Vaughan recalled. “She loved being part of the community. She would frequently go to events, engage others, and share resources that might positively impact their lives.”

As the community comes together to mourn the loss of Beckstrom, her legacy of service and compassion will live on. For more information on the investigation into the shooting, visit Here.
