Deadly Mass Shooting in South Africa Leaves 11 Dead, Including Three Children

A devastating mass shooting occurred on Saturday at an unlicensed bar near the South African capital, Pretoria, resulting in the loss of 11 lives, including three children. The South African Police Services (SAPS) reported that the victims included a 3-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl. The ages of the other victims have not been disclosed.

According to the SAPS, 14 people were also wounded in the shooting and were taken to the hospital for treatment. The police are currently searching for three male suspects in connection with the incident. The shooting took place at an illegal bar inside a hostel in the Saulsville township, west of Pretoria, in the early hours of Saturday. Ten of the victims died at the scene, while the 11th victim succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Investigation and Response

Police spokesperson Brig. Athlenda Mathe stated that the motive behind the killings is still unclear. The shooting occurred at around 4:15 a.m., but the police were only alerted at 6:00 a.m. Mathe explained that the suspects entered the hostel, where a group of people were drinking, and began shooting randomly. The SAPS are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and have launched an investigation into the mass shooting.

South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, with over 26,000 homicides recorded in 2024, averaging more than 70 per day. Firearms are the leading cause of death in homicides, and many killings are committed with illegal guns. The country has relatively strict gun ownership laws, but the prevalence of illegal guns remains a significant concern.

Context and Previous Incidents

Mass shootings at bars, known as shebeens or taverns, have become a recurring issue in South Africa. In recent years, there have been several incidents, including one in Durban that left eight people dead just a few months ago. In September 2024, 17 people were killed in two separate incidents in the same rural town. A bar shooting in Johannesburg’s Soweto township resulted in 16 deaths in 2022. Mathe noted that mass shootings at unlicensed bars are becoming a serious problem, and the police have taken measures to address the issue, shutting down over 11,000 illegal taverns and arresting more than 18,000 people for involvement in illegal liquor sales between April and September this year.

Recent mass killings in South Africa have not been limited to bars. In September last year, 18 people, including 15 women, were killed in mass shootings at two houses on the same road in a rural part of Eastern Cape province. Seven men were arrested and face multiple charges of murder, while police recovered three AK-style assault rifles believed to have been used in the shootings.
