Deadly Bomb Explosion in Eastern Congo Despite Recent Peace Agreement

A devastating bomb explosion occurred in the town of Sange, South Kivu, in eastern Congo, resulting in the loss of over 30 lives and injuring 20 others. The blast happened amidst a dispute between the Congolese army, known as FARDC, and a pro-government militia called Wazalendo, which has been assisting the army in combating insurgents in the region.

According to residents and civil society leaders, the clash between FARDC and Wazalendo led to the explosion, which has caused widespread panic and displacement. The incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the recent peace agreement signed in Washington, aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between the Congolese armed forces and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group.

Background of the Conflict

The eastern part of Congo is home to over 100 armed groups vying for control, with the M23 group being one of the most prominent. The conflict has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with more than 7 million people displaced, according to officials. The region is rich in minerals, which has further fueled the conflict.

The U.S.-brokered peace agreement, signed last week, was hailed as a major step towards peace in the country. However, the continued fighting and the recent bomb explosion have raised questions about the agreement’s effectiveness. Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi has accused Rwanda of violating the peace agreement and organizing the plundering of natural resources.

Eye Witness Accounts and Reactions

Residents of Sange have described the scene as chaotic, with many fleeing for safety. “FARDC soldiers were coming from the front lines and wanted to reach the city of Uvira,” said Faraja Mahano Robert, a civil society leader in Sange. “Once in Sange, they were ordered not to proceed, but some disagreed. That’s when they started shooting at each other, and then a bomb exploded, killing many people.”

Another resident, David Kaserore, expressed frustration and desperation, stating, “It’s difficult to distinguish between the enemy and the FARDC, as they are killing all the civilians. We demand that the government end this war. We are tired.”

International Reactions and Concerns

Edouard Bizimana, the foreign minister of Burundi, has accused Rwanda of “playing a double game” and intensifying attacks on civilians. Burundian forces are fighting alongside the Congolese army to combat the M23 armed group. Bizimana has warned Rwanda that Burundi will not tolerate such actions and has the right to prosecute those responsible.

The situation in eastern Congo remains volatile, with continued fighting and displacement. The international community is urged to take notice and work towards a lasting solution to the conflict. For more information, visit Here
