Allegations of Excessive Alcohol Service and Negligence on Royal Caribbean Cruise

A disturbing incident has come to light involving the death of a 35-year-old California man, Michael Virgil, who passed away on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in December 2024. According to a lawsuit filed by his family, Virgil was served at least 33 alcoholic drinks at the ship’s bar, despite exhibiting obvious signs of intoxication. This tragic event has raised concerns about the cruise line’s alcohol service policies and the training of its crew members.

The incident occurred on December 13, 2024, when Virgil boarded the Navigator of the Seas in Los Angeles with his fiancée, Connie Aguilar, and their son. As they were en route to Ensenada, Mexico, Royal Caribbean crew members allegedly overserved Virgil “in a matter of hours,” despite his visible intoxication. The lawsuit claims that the crew members failed to refuse alcohol service to Virgil, as required by their policies, and instead continued to serve him, ultimately contributing to his death.

Allegations of Negligence and Excessive Force

The lawsuit also alleges that Royal Caribbean security members used excessive force when confronting Virgil, who had become agitated and disoriented due to his intoxication. The security members allegedly tackled him to the ground and subdued him “with their full body weight,” and also injected him with Haloperidol, a prescription medication used to treat psychotic disorders, at the request of the ship’s captain. Furthermore, multiple cans of pepper spray were used on him, according to the lawsuit.

The incident has sparked concerns about the cruise line’s hiring and training practices, particularly with regards to its medical and security personnel. The lawsuit claims that Royal Caribbean’s negligence in these areas contributed to Virgil’s death, and that the company’s “all you can drink” beverage packages and aggressive marketing tactics encourage excessive alcohol consumption among passengers.

Similar Incidents and Concerns About Alcohol Service

This is not the first incident of its kind involving Royal Caribbean and allegations of excessive alcohol service. In October 2024, a 66-year-old woman, Dulcie White, went overboard during a Taylor Swift-themed cruise after being served alcohol despite signs of extreme intoxication. Her family filed a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean, citing the company’s unlimited alcoholic beverages package as a contributing factor to her death.

In response to these incidents, Royal Caribbean has stated that it is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for its passengers. However, the lawsuits and allegations of negligence and excessive force raise questions about the company’s policies and practices, particularly with regards to alcohol service and crew training.
