The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has made a significant change to its online page explaining the causes of climate change, removing any mention of fossil fuels as the main driver of global warming. This alteration has sparked concern among scientists and former EPA officials, who argue that the new information is misleading and harmful. According to scientists, nearly all of the warming the world is experiencing is due to human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels. The EPA’s decision to remove this information from its website has been met with criticism from experts, including University of California climate scientist Daniel Swain, who notes that the website was a valuable tool for educators and the public. Former Obama National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief Jane Lubchenco also expressed concern, stating that the government has a responsibility to provide accurate information about climate change.
The October version of the EPA’s page on climate change causes stated that human activities, such as the release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, have changed the Earth’s climate since the Industrial Revolution. Democratic EPA chief Gina McCarthy also spoke out against the change, calling current EPA chief Lee Zeldin “a wolf in sheep’s clothing” who is actively working against efforts to protect the environment and public health.
