Tragedy Strikes Stewartville High School: Student Critically Injured, Man Dead in Shooting
A devastating incident occurred at Stewartville High School in Minnesota on Friday morning, leaving a student critically injured and a man dead. The shooting took place in the school’s parking lot around 5 a.m. as the wrestling team was preparing to depart for a tournament in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
According to Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson, the student was shot and found on the ground in the parking lot by coaching staff. A second shot was heard, and an adult male was discovered with a rifle in his hand and an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The male was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation and Response
The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Sheriff Torgerson emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that speculation about the incident can be harmful. “The worst thing people can do is just start speculation on this or that, or relationships and this sort of thing,” he said. “That is not going to help anybody, ever.”
The students who were at the scene were held until they could be reunited with their families, which was completed by 11 a.m. The school’s wrestling team had around 40 members and coaches present at the time of the incident, but none reported seeing the shooting.
Support and Resources
Superintendent Belinda Selfors announced that classes and school activities were canceled for the day to allow law enforcement full access to the school and site. The district has made care and support teams available to students and staff, which will continue to be available over the weekend and when school resumes on Monday.
“We are here to support our students, our staff and our communities in any way that we can,” Selfors said. The community is coming together to support those affected by the tragedy, and the school district is focused on providing a safe and supportive environment for all students.
