House Republicans Unveil Plan to Address Health Care Costs Amid Looming Deadline
As the year-end deadline approaches for the expiration of tax credits that will result in skyrocketing premiums for over 20 million Americans, House Republican leaders have unveiled a plan to address health care costs. The plan, announced on Friday, aims to tackle the rising costs of health care while also providing an opportunity for lawmakers to vote on an amendment to extend the expiring tax credits.
The proposal includes provisions to expand association health plans, which allow multiple employers to band together to purchase coverage and lower the costs of benefits. Additionally, the plan provides funding for cost-sharing reduction payments, which help lower premiums for some Affordable Care Act (ACA) enrollees. The plan also requires more transparency from pharmacy benefit managers in an effort to lower drug costs. According to House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, the plan “tackles the real drivers of health care costs to provide affordable care, increase access and choice, and restore integrity to our nation’s health care system for all Americans.”
Extension of Affordable Care Act Subsidies Remains a Point of Contention
However, the plan does not include an extension of the ACA subsidies, which have been a point of contention among lawmakers. Moderate Republicans have been pushing for a vote on separate legislation to extend the tax credits for one to two years with reforms, while Democrats have advocated for a three-year extension without reforms. The Republican plan allows for a vote on an amendment to extend the expiring tax credits, but it is unclear whether it will have enough support to pass.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, has expressed opposition to the GOP proposal, calling it an “11th hour measure” that is “not designed to secure bipartisan support.” Jeffries stated that House Democrats will continue to fight to protect the healthcare of the American people and are willing to work with Republicans who want to prevent the ACA tax credits from expiring at the end of the month.
Uncertainty Surrounds the Plan’s Prospects
The House Rules Committee is set to take up the package on Tuesday afternoon, with a potential floor vote as soon as Tuesday evening or Wednesday. However, it is unclear whether the plan has enough support to survive a floor vote. The proposal’s fate remains uncertain, with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle expressing concerns and criticisms.
