Unseasonal Rain in Southern California: A Rare Sight
The remnants of Tropical Storm Juliette, which formed in the Eastern Pacific, are bringing welcome rain to the parched Southwest and portions of Southern California. According to FOX Weather meteorologists Stephen Morgan and Marissa Torres, this unusual weather pattern is expected to continue through the end of the week. The region has been experiencing a wet and stormy week, with Phoenix recently being hit by a massive haboob that plunged the city into darkness.
The remnants of what was once Tropical Storm Juliette in the Eastern Pacific is bringing some rain to the Southwest and portions of Southern California. FOX Weather meteorologists Stephen Morgan and Marissa Torres have the latest on Aug. 28, 2025.
Monsoon Season in Full Swing
Monsoon season is in full swing across the Southwest, with torrential rain leading to a mudslide that covered portions of Interstate 80 in Nevada. The road was forced to close overnight, but crews worked through the night to clear the mud and debris, and the highway was reopened early Thursday morning. More monsoon rain and thunderstorms are expected in the West and Southwest, but it’s the rare rain in Southern California that’s making headlines.

Drought Relief
The rain is definitely needed in the West and Southwest, with Arizona being 100% in drought. The same is true for portions of Southern California, including the San Diego area. According to FOX Weather Meteorologist Marissa Torres, “Whenever we have even a decaying tropical system, sometimes the upper-level winds can scoop up that moisture and transport it to land.” San Diego typically doesn’t see rain in August, with an average of only 0.01 inches. The last measurable rain that fell in August in San Diego occurred back in 2023.

No Flood Concerns
While rain is in the forecast on Thursday, flooding doesn’t appear to be a concern at this time. According to Torres, “There’s no flood concern in Southern California for (Thursday), which speaks to some of the lightness of the rain.” For more information on the weather forecast, visit Here
