President Trump’s Vision for a New CNN: A Shift in Ownership and Leadership

As the battle for control of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) heats up, with Netflix and Paramount vying for ownership, President Trump has made it clear that he wants a different kind of CNN. The President’s desire for a change in leadership and ownership at the cable news channel stems from his long-standing criticism of the network, which he believes has been unfair to him and his administration.

Trump’s comments have sparked concerns among CNN insiders that the network’s journalistic independence may be compromised in the event of a WBD deal. The President has stated that he will be “involved” in the government’s regulatory review of the deal, injecting his animus toward CNN into the process. This has raised eyebrows, given the network’s history of aggressive coverage of Trump’s presidency.

Paramount’s Proposed Changes to CNN

A Wall Street Journal report revealed that Paramount Chief Executive David Ellison has signaled to Trump administration officials that he would make “sweeping changes” to CNN if his company were to take control. This could include combining CNN’s newsgathering operations with Paramount’s CBS News, where conservative-friendly Bari Weiss has been installed as editor-in-chief. Such a move would likely be seen as an attempt to appease Trump and his supporters.

However, experts warn that attempting to satisfy Trump’s desire for more positive coverage could be a slippery slope. Jon Klein, a digital entrepreneur and former CNN president, believes that it would be folly for the network to blatantly court conservatives again. “You’re not going to convince all those Fox News viewers that suddenly CNN is friendly to them and their way of life,” he said.

The Risks of Chasing Ideological Balance

CNN has already experienced the impact of attempting to bring more right-leaning voices to its programming. Under Chris Licht, the executive brought in to run the network in 2022, CNN saw an immediate exodus of viewers, putting it in third place behind MSNBC. The network’s profit has also declined significantly, from $1.2 billion earlier in the decade to an expected $675 million this year.

Klein argues that CNN and other legacy news organizations are better off focusing on developing an effective digital strategy to ensure their future, rather than chasing ideological balance. “Fox is an incredibly well-oiled machine,” he said. “CNN and other networks should focus on building a strong digital presence, rather than trying to appeal to a specific ideological audience.”

Uncertainty and Concerns for CNN’s Future

CNN Chairman Mark Thompson has urged staff to remain calm and focused on their work, despite the uncertainty surrounding the network’s future. However, the rank and file may be concerned about the potential consequences of a WBD deal, including the possibility of a Trump-friendly owner if the network were to be spun off separately.

As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the future of CNN hangs in the balance. Will the network emerge from the WBD deal with its journalistic independence intact, or will it succumb to pressure from the White House and other external forces? Only time will tell.
