A Chilling Attack and a Web of Deceit: The Morgan Metzer Story
In the early hours of New Year’s Day 2021, Morgan Metzer’s life was forever changed when a masked intruder, dressed in all black, burst into her bedroom in Canton, Georgia. The assailant, who would later be revealed to be her ex-husband, Rod Metzer, subjected her to a brutal attack, using zip ties to restrain her wrists and strangling her nearly unconscious twice. The traumatic event would unravel a complex and disturbing tale of deception, manipulation, and abuse.
A History of Abuse and a Faked Cancer Diagnosis
Morgan and Rod Metzer’s nearly 20-year relationship was marked by years of mental and physical abuse, according to Morgan. Despite their divorce, Rod continued to exert control over Morgan, even faking a pancreatic cancer diagnosis to garner sympathy and manipulate her into letting him stay with her. Morgan, who had been planning to move on with her life, was initially deceived by Rod’s claims, which included fabricated doctor’s notes and a fake email account posing as a medical professional.
Rod’s internet search history, uncovered by investigators, revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior, including searches on “How to get sympathy from your ex” and “How to change the sound of your voice.” These findings, combined with the discovery of a fake cancer diagnosis letter and a created bill for a doctor’s office, exposed the extent of Rod’s deception. Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney for Cherokee County, Rachel Ashe, noted that Rod’s actions were a deliberate attempt to convince Morgan of his fake cancer diagnosis, demonstrating a calculated and manipulative mindset.
An Investigation and a Guilty Plea
Following the attack, investigators became suspicious of Rod’s story, which included claims of hearing someone knock on his apartment window and say Morgan’s name, prompting him to check on her. However, inconsistencies in his alibi and the discovery of his internet search history led to his arrest and subsequent guilty plea to 14 counts relating to the attack. Rod Metzer was sentenced to 70 years, with 25 years in prison and an additional 45 years of probation.
Morgan Metzer’s harrowing experience serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic abuse and the importance of seeking help and support. Her story, featured on “48 Hours,” highlights the complexities of abusive relationships and the need for awareness and education.
