Brown University Shooting: Person of Interest Released, Investigation Ongoing
A person of interest who was detained overnight in connection with the deadly shooting at Brown University is set to be released, according to officials. The shooting, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, resulted in the deaths of two people and injured nine others in the engineering building of the Ivy League school in Providence, Rhode Island, during final exams.
Attorney General Peter Neronha stated that while some evidence initially pointed to the person of interest, further investigation revealed that the evidence now “points in a different direction.” As a result, the person of interest will be released from custody. Providence Police Chief Colonel Oscar L. Perez Jr. emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that the release of the person of interest is not a mistake, but rather a natural part of the investigative process.
Investigation and Response
The FBI has set up a command center and established a digital media intake portal to collect images and videos from the public related to the incident. University President Christina Paxson confirmed that all the victims, both those killed and wounded, were students. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley reported that seven of the hospitalized victims remain in stable condition, while one is in critical condition, and one person with less severe injuries has been discharged.
The police have released surveillance video showing the suspect, dressed in black, calmly walking away from the scene. The suspect’s face is not visible in the video, and it is unclear whether the suspect is a student. The police are still searching for the person seen in the video and are continuing to investigate the incident.
Support and Response from the University and Community
The university has canceled remaining classes and exams for the semester, and students are free to leave campus. Those who remain on campus will have access to services and support. The university’s Provost, Francis Doyle, emphasized the importance of providing care and support to the community during this difficult time. An enhanced police presence will be maintained around the city to comfort the community, but not because the area is part of the investigation.
President Trump offered his condolences and respects to the victims, stating, “To the nine injured, get well fast and to the families of those two that are no longer with us, I pay my deepest regards and respect from the United States of America.”
