Movie Review: “The Thursday Murder Club” – A Cozy Mystery with a Stellar Cast

By JOCELYN NOVECK

The concept of retirement is redefined in “The Thursday Murder Club,” a charming and entertaining adaptation of Richard Osman’s mystery novel. The story takes place in a luxurious retirement home, Coopers Chase, nestled in the English countryside, where the residents enjoy a life of comfort and leisure.

A Dreamy Setting and a Talented Cast

The film features an all-star cast, including Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley, who play a group of retirees with unique skills and backgrounds. Mirren’s character, Elizabeth, is a former spy, while Brosnan’s Ron is a former trade unionist, and Kingsley’s Ibrahim is a former psychiatrist. Together, they form a detective club that meets weekly to discuss cold cases.

The movie’s setting, Coopers Chase, is a character in itself, with its stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and top-notch amenities. The residents enjoy a range of activities, from archery and life-drawing classes to wine tastings and gourmet meals. The film’s portrayal of retirement as a time of luxury and leisure is certainly appealing, but it also raises questions about the reality of aging and the challenges that come with it.

The cast’s performances are a highlight of the film, with Mirren shining as the sharp-witted and fearless Elizabeth. The chemistry between the leads is palpable, and their banter and interactions are some of the movie’s most enjoyable moments. The supporting cast, including Celia Imrie and David Tennant, also deliver strong performances.

A Cozy Mystery with a Twist

The movie’s plot is engaging, if not particularly original. The Thursday Murder Club is tasked with solving a real-life murder that takes place at Coopers Chase, and they must use their collective skills and experience to unravel the mystery. Along the way, they encounter a range of suspects and motives, from greedy business partners to hidden secrets and lies.

While the plot is predictable at times, the film’s pacing is well-balanced, and the tension builds steadily as the mystery unfolds. The movie’s themes of aging, friendship, and the power of the human spirit are well-explored, and the cast’s performances bring depth and nuance to the story.

Overall, “The Thursday Murder Club” is a delightful and entertaining film that is sure to appeal to fans of cozy mysteries and character-driven dramas. With its talented cast, stunning setting, and engaging plot, it’s a must-see for anyone looking for a fun and thought-provoking movie experience.

Rating: PG-13 for violent content/bloody images, strong language, and some sexual references. Running time: 118 minutes. Rating: Two and a half stars out of four.
