George Clooney’s Decision to Limit On-Screen Romance
George Clooney, the renowned actor, has recently announced that he will no longer engage in romantic scenes with female co-stars on screen. This decision comes after a thoughtful conversation with his wife, Amal Clooney, regarding the matter. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Clooney expressed his intention to follow in the footsteps of Paul Newman, who also limited his on-screen romantic interactions as he grew older.
“I’ve been trying to go the route Paul Newman did – ‘Okay, well, I’m not kissing a girl anymore,’” the 64-year-old actor stated. This decision is not only a personal choice but also a consideration of his age and the changing dynamics of his career. Clooney reflected on his conversation with Amal, saying, “When I turned 60, I had a conversation with my wife. I said, ‘Look, I can still play basketball with the boys. I play with 25-year-old guys. I can still hang, I’m in shape. But in 25 years, I’m 85 years old. It doesn’t matter how many granola bars you eat, that’s a real number.’”
A Career of Romantic Roles
Clooney’s career has been marked by numerous romantic roles, including his early days as Dr. Doug Ross in the popular medical drama “ER” and his subsequent film appearances in “One Fine Day,” “Out of Sight,” “Solaris,” “Up in the Air,” “The American,” and “Ticket to Paradise.” His on-screen romances have been a significant part of his appeal, with co-stars including Michelle Pfeiffer, Jennifer Lopez, Natascha McElhone, Vera Farmiga, Violante Placido, and Julia Roberts.
However, Clooney has expressed his desire to move away from romantic films, citing his age and the need to take on more mature roles. In an interview with “60 Minutes” earlier this year, he stated, “Look, I’m 63 years old. I’m not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men. That’s not my job. I’m not doing romantic films anymore.”
Personal Life and Family
Clooney’s decision to limit his on-screen romance is also influenced by his personal life and family. He has been married to Amal Clooney since 2014, and they have twins, Ella and Alexander, born in 2017. The family has chosen to live on a farm in France, away from the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles. In an interview with Esquire, Clooney explained, “We’re very lucky. You know, we live on a farm in France.” He added, “A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like — they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”
Clooney has also expressed concerns about raising his children in the culture of Hollywood, stating, “I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life.” He prefers the more laid-back attitude towards fame in France, saying, “France, they kind of don’t give a s–t about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”
