Comedian Matt Rife Defends Sydney Sweeney Amid American Eagle Ad Backlash

Matt Rife, a 29-year-old comedian, has come to the defense of actress Sydney Sweeney, who has been facing backlash for her American Eagle jeans ads and the sale of bar soaps from her bathing water. Rife took to social media to express his support for Sweeney, stating that she is being targeted by “absolute garbage losers” who are misinterpreting her actions.

“I keep seeing people who are concerned for Sydney Sweeney for no reason,” Rife wrote on X. “She learns that the Internet is full of absolute garbage losers who turn everything into a misinterpretation of C-NTY. People are terrible.” Rife’s comments come after Sweeney faced criticism for her American Eagle campaign, which some left-wing critics claimed promoted racism, eugenics, and Western beauty standards.

Sweeney’s American Eagle Campaign and the Backlash

Sweeney’s campaign for American Eagle featured the slogan “Sydney Sweeney is great jeans,” which some critics claimed contained Nazi propaganda. The actress also faced criticism for her comments about genetics in the campaign, stating that “genes are passed on by parents to descendants that often determine properties such as hair color, personality, and even eye color.” American Eagle quickly defended the campaign, stating that it was about the jeans and Sweeney’s narrative.

Despite the backlash, some stars like Lizzo and Doja Cat mocked Sweeney and American Eagle on social media, while others like Dr. Phil and President Donald Trump defended her. The controversy surrounding the campaign did not seem to affect American Eagle’s sales, as the company’s stock increased by over 10% after the campaign launched.

Sweeney’s Response to the Controversy

Sweeney has avoided directly addressing the controversy, instead focusing on her work and other projects. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, she discussed the importance of having a finger on the pulse of what people are saying online. “I think it’s important to have a finger on the pulse of what people say because everything is a conversation with the audience,” she said.

Sweeney also referred to the fan-created “bathing water candle” inspired by a moment in the 2023 film “Saltburn,” in which Jacob Elordi’s character drinks bathing water. The actress seemed to take the controversy in stride, focusing on her work and the positive response from her fans.
