Louvre Heist: Four More Arrests Made in Investigation into Daring Daylight Robbery

French authorities have announced the arrest of four more individuals in connection with the brazen daylight heist of imperial jewels from the Louvre Museum last month. The suspects, two men aged 38 and 39, and two women aged 31 and 40, were taken into custody on Tuesday, according to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau.

The investigation, led by Beccuau’s office, has been ongoing since the theft occurred on October 19. The stolen jewels, valued at approximately $102 million, include a diamond-and-emerald necklace given by Napoleon to Empress Marie-Louise, as well as jewels tied to 19th-century Queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense, and Empress Eugénie’s pearl-and-diamond tiara. Unfortunately, the loot has not been recovered, with the exception of a diamond-and-emerald-studded crown that was dropped by the thieves during their escape.

Previous Arrests and Investigation

A police dragnet had previously caught other suspected members of the four-person team thought to have carried out the daring robbery. Investigating magistrates have filed preliminary charges against three men and one woman who were arrested last month. One of the men already charged in the heist, a 37-year-old, was in a relationship with the woman and they have children, according to Beccuau.

The heist itself was a remarkably brazen affair, with the thieves taking just seven minutes to steal the jewels before fleeing on scooters. The gang parked a moving truck with a ladder below the museum’s Apollo Gallery, ascended in a bucket, broke a window, and used angle grinders to cut into glass display booths containing the treasures.

Expert Analysis and Context

The Louvre, as the world’s most-visited art museum, has a long history of showcasing some of the world’s most valuable and historically significant artifacts. The theft of these imperial jewels is a significant blow to the museum and the art world at large. According to experts, the investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to recover the stolen jewels and bring those responsible to justice.
