Roblox Faces Mounting Lawsuits Over Alleged Failure to Protect Children from Predators
Roblox, a popular online gaming platform, is facing a surge in lawsuits from parents who claim the company has not done enough to safeguard children from sexual predators. A recent lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court by a mother, whose identity has not been revealed, alleges that her 12-year-old daughter was manipulated by a predator on the platform, leading to a disturbing encounter.
The mother had initially thought Roblox was a safe and educational platform for her child, but her daughter soon befriended a user known as “Precious” who claimed to be 15 years old. The predator allegedly persuaded the girl to send explicit photos over Discord, a social media platform, and even attempted to introduce her to a group of older men at a beach. The child has since suffered from psychological trauma, depression, and emotional distress.
Systemic Failures and Prioritization of Profits
The lawsuit accuses Roblox and Discord of prioritizing profits over safety, creating a “digital” and “real-life nightmare” for children. It also alleges that the companies’ failures are systemic, and many other children have fallen victim to predators on the platforms. The lawsuit states that “her innocence has been snatched from her, and her life will never be the same.”
Roblox has responded by stating that it is “deeply troubled by any incident that endangers any user” and prioritizes online safety. The company claims to have launched 145 new safety initiatives this year alone to improve its safety tools and platform restrictions. Discord has also stated its commitment to safety, requiring users to be at least 13 years old and maintaining systems to prevent the spread of sexual exploitation and grooming.
Mounting Scrutiny and Calls for Improved Safety Measures
This lawsuit is the latest in a series of scrutinies facing Roblox, with over 151 million daily users. Earlier this year, the platform faced a wave of lawsuits from individuals in various states who alleged that predators were posing as kids on the platform and sexually exploiting children. Roblox has taken steps to address child-safety concerns, including requiring users to verify their age to chat with other players.
However, the lawsuit by the Los Angeles County woman calls these safety changes “woefully inadequate” and claims they were made “too late.” The lawsuit alleges that these changes could have been implemented years ago and that Roblox only took action when its stock was threatened. As the company continues to face mounting lawsuits and criticism, it remains to be seen whether its efforts to improve safety will be enough to protect its young users.
