Powerful Atmospheric River Brings Severe Flooding to Pacific Northwest

A strong atmospheric river continues to slam the Pacific Northwest, causing widespread flooding and disruptions across the region. Over a foot of rain has been reported in parts of Washington, with rounds of heavy rain pummeling the state. Flood Watches are in effect across northwest Washington, including Seattle, with an additional 2-3 inches of rain expected for coastal Washington. Localized areas may see even more significant amounts, with 3-5 inches possible as downpours continue to soak the region through Thursday.

Evacuations and Road Closures

SPOKANE, Wash. – The powerful atmospheric river has triggered numerous mandatory evacuations, swiftwater rescues, and major road closures. Skagit County, one of the northernmost counties in the state, has announced major flooding and urged residents living within the 100-year flood plain to evacuate to higher ground. The county’s Emergency Operations Center has opened several shelters for those displaced.

Numerous state roads have been closed due to flooding and mudslides, including part of Interstate 90 near North Bend in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Flooding and debris slides have also impacted several key mountain passes, with Stevens Pass currently closed and a section of State Route 906 south of Snoqualmie Pass closed due to water over the roadway.

Statewide Emergency Declaration

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson has declared a statewide emergency amid potentially catastrophic flooding, activating the National Guard to respond to requests for help. The governor has announced that 100 National Guard members will be active and available, with an additional 200 set to arrive by Thursday.

Flood Warnings have been issued for several rivers, including the Wenatchee River at Peshastin, Entiat River near Ardenvoir, and Stehekin River at Stehekin. Major flooding is likely between Leavenworth and Wenatchee, with the Wenatchee River expected to exceed 15 ft for the first time since 2006.

River Flooding and Emergency Response

Minor flooding is expected in the Entiat Valley as the Entiat River exceeds 7.5 ft, with a Flood Warning in place through Thursday afternoon. A Flood Warning is also in place near the Stehekin River, which is flowing at a level of 26.4 ft, causing minor flooding on nearby roads and areas.

The Puyallup River near Orting has entered Major Flood Stage, with reports of flooded roads and evacuation orders issued for surrounding streets. The Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue has responded to several emergency calls due to flooding, using inflatable kayaks to aid passengers stranded in their cars in floodwaters.

Forecast and Precautions

Over a dozen rivers are forecast to reach major flood stage in the coming days, according to the FOX Forecast Center. Residents are advised to exercise caution while driving, not to drive past road closure signs, and to turn around if they encounter water over the roadway. The Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue reminds the public to never attempt to drive through water.
