Incident at Humboldt High School: Pellet Gun Found in 11-Year-Old’s Backpack

A concerning incident occurred at Humboldt High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, when an 11-year-old boy was found with a realistic-looking pellet gun in his backpack. According to the St. Paul Police Department, the incident began when juveniles made “shooting gestures” with their fingers towards school security officers, prompting a call to the authorities.

Investigation and Response

Police were called to the scene at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday and searched the area, locating the juveniles involved about half a mile from the school. As officers approached, a juvenile threw a backpack over a fence, which was later found to contain the pellet gun. The 11-year-old boy who owned the backpack was detained and released to his family members. Notably, the boy is not a student at Humboldt High School or affiliated with St. Paul Public Schools, as stated by Principal Valerie Littles-Butler in a letter to families.

The school was placed in a “secure” protocol during the incident, with doors locked and monitored until dismissal. The St. Paul Police Department continues to investigate the incident, ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff. As reported by Alyssa Arcand, a St. Paul police spokeswoman, the incident highlights the importance of vigilance and prompt response to potential threats in schools.

Importance of School Safety

The incident at Humboldt High School serves as a reminder of the need for effective safety protocols and emergency response plans in educational institutions. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, incidents involving weapons in schools can have a significant impact on students, teachers, and the community as a whole. By prioritizing school safety and security, educators and law enforcement can work together to prevent such incidents and provide a secure learning environment for all students.
