Google Introduces Long-Awaited Feature to Change Gmail Addresses

After years of user requests, Google has finally introduced the ability to change Gmail addresses without losing any data or services. This feature allows users to swap out their existing @gmail.com address for a new one, while keeping all their saved data, including photos, messages, and emails, intact. The old email address will remain active, and users will continue to receive emails sent to both the old and new addresses.

The rollout of this feature is gradual, and not all users have access to it yet. According to Google’s support page, the ability to change Google Account email addresses is being introduced to all users over time. This means that some users may not be able to change their email addresses immediately, but they will be able to do so in the near future.

Benefits for Users

The introduction of this feature has been met with excitement from users, particularly those who chose embarrassing or cringe-worthy email addresses as teenagers. Many users have taken to social media to celebrate the update, with one user posting on X, “Feature needed: 2005. Feature arriving: 2025. Gap: two decades of suffering.” Another user joked, “So all those years of ‘cool’ usernames and cringe emails can be erased… shame it can’t delete the memories associated with them.”

Members of the transgender community and others who have changed their names have also welcomed the new feature, as it allows them to distance themselves from their former names. This update provides a more inclusive and user-friendly experience for all Gmail users.

How to Change Your Gmail Address

To change your Gmail address, users need to confirm that the feature has been rolled out for their account. They can do this by clicking on “Manage Your Google Account” in their Gmail account, then clicking on their Gmail account email address under “Personal Info.” If the option is available in their region, they can proceed by clicking on the “Change your Google Account email address” option.

It’s worth noting that Google only allows accounts that end in @gmail.com to make changes, and the new address must also end in @gmail.com. Additionally, users cannot register another email address for the same account for the next 12 months after changing their email address.
