The incident occurred on Thursday, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that the Cessna C550 crashed while landing at the regional airport around 10:15 a.m.

NASCAR Community Mourns the Loss of a Beloved Member

NASCAR has released a statement expressing their devastation at the loss of Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, son Ryder, Craig Wadsworth, and Dennis and Jack Dutton. The statement describes Biffle as a “beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many.” Rep. Richard Hudson (NC-9th District) also mourned the loss, saying, “They were friends who lived their lives focused on helping others. Greg was a great NASCAR champion who thrilled millions of fans. But he was an extraordinary person as well, and will be remembered for his service to others as much as for his fearlessness on the track.”

Biffle’s humanitarian efforts, particularly during Hurricane Helene, which devastated parts of North Carolina, have been widely recognized. He flew missions in his private helicopter, delivering essential supplies and saving lives. NASCAR acknowledged his tireless work, saying, “His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport.”

Hurricane Relief Efforts and Legacy

Biffle’s extensive lifesaving efforts during Hurricane Helene earned him the 2024 National Motorsports Press Association Myers Brothers Award. He used his personal helicopter to deliver aid to remote victims entirely cut off due to extensive flooding. The award press release acknowledged his “unselfish efforts as part of Operation Helidrop,” which spearheaded NASCAR’s mobilization to help those in need.

In one instance, Biffle’s helicopter successfully landed in a mountainous area in North Carolina, providing essential supplies to a victim in need. Rep. Hudson recalled, “The last time I spoke with Cristina, just a couple of weeks ago, she reached out to ask how she could help with relief efforts in Jamaica. That’s who the Biffles were.”

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that there were fatalities, and the Mobile Command Unit has been deployed to the scene to support investigators. The NTSB is expected to hold a media briefing on Friday, although a time and place have yet to be announced.
