Tragic Accident: Oklahoma Man’s Target Practice Turns Deadly

A shocking incident occurred on Christmas Day in Oklahoma, where a man’s target practice in his backyard resulted in the fatal shooting of a woman several blocks away. According to local authorities, the victim was sitting with her family under a covered porch when she was struck by a bullet. The incident highlights the importance of gun safety and responsible handling of firearms.

The victim, who was holding a child in her left arm, was hit by a bullet in her right upper arm, which entered her chest cavity. Despite CPR efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the scene. The suspect, 33-year-old Cody Wayne Adams, was charged with first-degree manslaughter. Adams had recently purchased a Glock.45 caliber handgun, which he claimed to have bought himself for Christmas.

Investigation and Charges

The investigation, led by Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Captain Timothy Vann, revealed that Adams had been shooting towards the ground in his backyard, but there was nothing to stop the bullets from traveling beyond his property. Adams consented to a search of his property, where a broken piece of ceramic tile was found in front of a Red Bull can, which accounted for the high angle of entry into the victim’s yard. When informed that his shooting was suspected to have caused the victim’s death, Adams became visibly upset and began to cry.

Adams acknowledged that he had been shooting south from his residence and that he had fired multiple rounds. His initial court appearance is scheduled for February 2, 2026, and his bond is set at $100,000. He is not allowed to have contact with the victim’s family. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible gun ownership and the potential consequences of reckless behavior.

Accidental Shootings: A Growing Concern

According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence report, more than 400 people were killed by accidental shootings in the United States in 2023. This incident highlights the need for increased awareness and education on gun safety to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. By promoting responsible gun handling and ownership, we can work towards reducing the number of accidental shootings and creating a safer community for everyone.
