Pediatrics group sues HHS for slicing funds for youngsters’s well being packages

Date:

American Academy of Pediatrics Sues US Department of Health and Human Services

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in response to the abrupt termination of grants worth nearly $12 million. The funding supported various public health programs, including initiatives to prevent sudden unexpected infant death, strengthen pediatric care in rural communities, and support teens facing substance use and mental health challenges.

Retaliation Allegations

The lawsuit alleges that HHS made the cuts in retaliation for the AAP’s vocal opposition to the Trump administration’s positions and actions, particularly regarding pediatric vaccines and access to gender-affirming care. The AAP has been a strong advocate for pediatric vaccines and has publicly criticized HHS positions on the topic. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been a prominent figure in the anti-vaccine movement, is seeking to broadly remake federal policies on vaccines.

The AAP’s CEO and executive vice president, Mark Del Monte, emphasized the organization’s dependence on its relationship with the federal government, stating that the partnership is essential for advancing policies that prioritize children’s health. The lawsuit claims that without the necessary funds, the AAP will be forced to terminate its work on dozens of programs that save children’s lives every day, leading to layoffs of dedicated employees.

Public Health Implications

The funding cuts have significant implications for public health, as the AAP’s programs support critical services such as hearing screenings for newborns and safe sleep campaigns to prevent sudden unexpected infant death. The lawsuit argues that the HHS is using federal funding as a political weapon to punish protected speech, attempting to silence one of the nation’s most trusted voices for children’s well-being.

Democracy Forward, the organization representing the AAP in the case, condemned the HHS’s actions, stating that the department is trying to silence the AAP for speaking the truth. The lawsuit seeks to block the funding cuts and ensure the continuation of vital child health programs.
