Schlossman: Why the Gophers-North Dakota hockey rivalry has endured

Date:

Introduction to the North Dakota-Minnesota Rivalry

The North Dakota-Minnesota rivalry has been a staple in college hockey for years, with a rich history of intense matches and unforgettable moments. However, with the dissolution of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, the dynamics of the rivalry have changed. The teams now compete in different conferences, and their games are no longer a regular occurrence. Despite this, the rivalry remains strong, with sellout crowds and high-energy atmospheres whenever the two teams meet.

Changes in the Rivalry

The breakup of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association led to significant changes in the North Dakota-Minnesota rivalry. The teams no longer battle for positioning in league standings, and the epic Final Five playoff games in front of 19,000 fans in downtown St. Paul are a thing of the past. The games now take place in the season’s opening month, when both teams are still finding their footing. Additionally, the familiarity between the teams is waning, with only a handful of players on each team having experienced the rivalry firsthand.

According to reports, when the teams meet this weekend in Grand Forks, only five Fighting Hawks and six Golden Gophers will have experienced the rivalry, due to significant roster turnover and a one-year hiatus. Despite these changes, the rivalry remains as intense as ever, with sellouts guaranteed wherever the teams play.

Enduring Success and Competitiveness

One reason the rivalry has endured is the continuous success of both programs. The University of North Dakota has won six National Collegiate Hockey Conference titles in 12 years, while the University of Minnesota has won the Big Ten seven times. In fact, it’s been 16 years since either team has had a losing season, a feat unmatched by other college hockey powerhouses. Denver, Boston University, Boston College, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Michigan State have all experienced at least one losing season in the same time period.

The series has also been marked by competitiveness, with no team dominating the other. There has been only one sweep in the last nine years, and only one back-to-back sweep in the last 30 years. No team has won more than five games in a row in the last two decades, and there has been only one four-game winning streak in the same span.

Regional Aspect and Unforgettable Moments

The regional aspect of the rivalry also plays a significant role in its enduring popularity. Many of the players on both teams are from Minnesota or North Dakota, and have likely crossed paths growing up. The fans also have a strong connection, with UND’s largest alumni base located in the Twin Cities. This leads to a unique dynamic, with office banter and bragging rights on the line whenever the teams meet.

Despite the changes in the rivalry, the teams continue to produce unforgettable moments. From Justin Holl’s last-second game winner to Gage Ausmus and Ryan Lindgren’s scuffle, the series has been marked by excitement and intensity. With 25 players on the two teams from Minnesota or North Dakota, the stakes are high, and the next unforgettable moment is just around the corner.
