Major Methamphetamine Bust in South Africa: $20 Million Worth of Illicit Drugs Seized

Officials in South Africa have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against illicit drugs, discovering a massive methamphetamine lab on a farm in the Mpumalanga province. According to a news release from the South African Police Service, the lab was found to be producing approximately $20 million worth of crystal meth. The operation, which was busted after a tip-off about suspicious activities on the farm, has led to the arrest of five North American citizens and a South African farm caretaker.

The South African Police Service received a tip-off about a strange chemical smell emanating from the premises, which prompted them to investigate further. Upon searching the farm, they found precursor chemicals used to make drugs, manufacturing equipment, a pellet gun loaded with blanks, and three live 9 millimeter rounds held by the farm caretaker. The police also discovered about $20 million worth of crystal meth, packed in buckets and lunchboxes, stored in freezers.

Photos shared by the South African Police Service on social media show multiple containers and large machinery, highlighting the scale of the operation. The farm caretaker, a South African national, was arrested and faces possible charges for possession of ammunition. The five North American suspects, who were in the country illegally, face possible drug and immigration-related charges.

Cracking Down on Illicit Drugs

The operation is being hailed as a significant step in the right direction to rid the streets of Mpumalanga of all types of drugs, according to Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial commissioner of the South African Police Service. The discovery of the meth lab and the subsequent arrests are a testament to the efforts of the South African authorities to combat the illicit drug trade.

A 2022 report described South Africa as one of the largest crystal meth consumer markets in the world, according to CBS News partner BBC News. Last year, police discovered another large meth lab in a remote farm area, leading to the arrest of two South Africans and three Mexican suspects. The police seized $100 million worth of precursor chemicals and illicit drugs.
