Thanksgiving Miracle: San Diego Lifeguards Rescue Couple’s Missing Dog from Ocean

A heartwarming tale of survival and rescue unfolded in San Diego on Thanksgiving Sunday, as a couple’s missing dog, Sadie, was found swimming half a mile offshore and brought back to safety by lifeguards. The incident highlights the importance of quick thinking, advanced technology, and the expertise of rescue teams in saving lives.

The couple, who were visiting San Diego, realized their 5-year-old black Labrador mix, Sadie, was missing while they were watching football. They used an AirTag on her collar to track her location and began searching for her along the beach. Meanwhile, a surfer alerted the lifeguard tower about a dog being swept into a rip current, prompting a search and rescue operation.

Search and Rescue Efforts

Lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard launched a search operation, scouring the area for over an hour. Despite the challenges, lifeguards Garrett Smerdon and Jack Alldredge remained hopeful, considering Sadie’s breed and age, which suggested she could still be alive and swimming. Their expertise and experience played a crucial role in the successful rescue.

The search party’s efforts eventually paid off when a rescue Jet Ski spotted Sadie half a mile offshore near South Mission Beach. The rescuer quickly loaded her onto a boat and brought her back to shore, reuniting her with her overjoyed owners. Sadie’s parents were present with rescuers when the radio call came in, confirming their dog had been found alive, and they were visibly emotional.

A Happy Ending

The successful rescue is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department lifeguards. “We just really wanted a happy ending,” Smerdon said, “and we’re glad that Sadie got to go back home and, you know, survive this pretty traumatic event.” The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared and having the right technology, such as AirTags, to help locate missing pets.
