Tropical Storm Jerry kinds over the central Atlantic, turning into tenth named storm this hurricane season

Date:

Tropical Storm Jerry Forms in the Atlantic, Poses Threat to Caribbean Islands

Tropical Storm Jerry has formed in the central Atlantic Ocean, marking the 10th named storm of the 2025 hurricane season. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm was located over 1,030 miles east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and a west-northwest trajectory at 23 mph. As of Tuesday night, forecasters predicted that Jerry would steadily strengthen and potentially develop into a hurricane within the next day or so.

Forecast and Potential Impact

The hurricane center has issued a tropical storm watch for several Caribbean islands, including Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, St. Barthelemy, Saint Martin, Sint Maarten, Saba, St. Eustatius, and Guadeloupe. On its current forecast track, Jerry is expected to be near or north of the northern Leeward Islands by late Thursday or Friday, although a landfall is not currently anticipated. However, the storm’s swells are likely to reach the islands on Thursday, causing life-threatening surf and rip currents. Additionally, Jerry is forecast to bring up to 4 inches of rain to the Leeward Islands, posing a risk of flash flooding.

The formation of Tropical Storm Jerry follows several other Atlantic storm systems, including Hurricane Humberto and Hurricane Imelda, which emerged at the end of September. While concerns were raised about the potential impact of these storms on Bermuda, only Imelda ultimately brushed the coast of the island as a Category 2 hurricane before quickly weakening. The southeastern United States also faced destructive surf, resulting in multiple coastal homes in North Carolina’s Outer Banks collapsing.

Hurricane Season 2025: A Relatively Quiet Year So Far

Despite the formation of Tropical Storm Jerry, the 2025 hurricane season has been relatively quiet, with only one of the nine previous named storms, Chantal, making landfall in the U.S. According to an outlook released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at the beginning of the season, between 13 and 19 named storms were predicted to form in the Atlantic, with up to nine becoming hurricanes and as many as five strengthening into powerful Category 5 storms. However, in August, NOAA revised its outlook to predict that 13 to 18 named storms would form, including five to nine hurricanes.
