Trump Taps New Architect for $300-Million White House Ballroom Project

President Trump has assigned a new architect to lead the design of the highly anticipated $300-million White House ballroom wing, replacing the previous lead designer with a consulting role. The new architect, Shalom Baranes Associates, a renowned Washington-based architecture firm, will be responsible for designing the ballroom that will replace the demolished East Wing.

According to a White House official, James McCrery, the former lead designer, will remain in a consulting role for the project. The White House spokesman, Davis Ingle, praised the new architect, stating, “Shalom is an accomplished architect whose work has shaped the architectural identity of our nation’s capital for decades, and his experience will be a great asset to the completion of this project.” However, the reason behind the change in architects was not specified.

Project Details and Controversies

The demolition of the East Wing, which previously housed the first lady’s office, began in October. The new ballroom is expected to be 90,000 square feet and hold 1,000 people, significantly larger than the main White House building, which is approximately 55,000 square feet. The project’s cost estimates have increased from $200 million to as much as $350 million, with Trump contributing to the project, although the exact amount has not been disclosed.

Wealthy individuals and corporate donors, including billionaire Steve Schwarzman, Amazon.com Inc., and Coinbase Inc., have also contributed funds to the project, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest for the president. The project has been met with controversy, with some critics arguing that it may interfere with the existing structure’s architectural style and historic significance.

Construction and Planning

Clark Construction Group LLC is leading the construction of the new ballroom, along with other projects in Washington, including a renovation of the Kennedy Center. Will Scharf, a White House aide and the chair of the National Capital Planning Commission, stated that the administration is scheduled to submit plans for the ballroom this month.
